The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Music Generations

It has been 20 years since Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the tools to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's nailed the epic lengthy instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow on-screen cues scrolling down the screen in time with the music. Each riff mimicked specific notes, creating the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio had already experimented in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, later purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Together, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable franchise which made a remarkable influence on numerous of the artists included, introducing decades-old groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the initial financial challenges in securing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like the Who – the publisher had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. But once the game became a hit, album purchases airtime increased, everyone wanted to be in.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many mothers and fathers reached out and thanked us for exposing their kids to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Northern Irish group the Answer included Never Too Late in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician Paul Mahon remembers how the series brought older hits to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, new demographic. Generally this had been considered music that was past it, however when it was included in the title young people were finding it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained unreleased in the US, so the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the band during their a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles that focused on each band’s catalogue and associated stories, visuals and legendary status. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said earned the band greater revenue compared to their studio albums. It moved well over 500,000 units in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music saw an increase of up to 40% during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

The series continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention played at double speed while hitting a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed it took nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up actual weapons and enlist,” says musician Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a successful tour when Through the Fire and Flames was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I remember our distributors informing us that we were selling albums like crazy,” he shares. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before top acts on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the track featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only hear a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I’m glad we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact from the Plastic Guitar

The best marketing, be it for cars, apparel or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “That thrill of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the co-founders believed humans have a natural human desire to create songs, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback in 2015.

Games such as the fan project and newer releases have maintained the scene active, with set to be something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has begun production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace another game following the classic?

“We thought such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible for it to persist for future fans.”
