The English and Wales Placed Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by sporting legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, setting up a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that same group.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from holders and world number one South Africa until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in 2023.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in the competition's existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six group winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
