As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
