Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
