European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
